Video Game Tester
I'm tired of all the misinformation that I'm seeing on the web about the interactive media industry (video game industry), particularly how to get a job as a video game tester. As someone who's done motion capture for a game developer, and regularly interacts with programmers, community managers, and pr within the industry, I'm appalled at the level of outright scamming that's going on, so I'm here to offer some REAL information about getting a job in this field.
How to get a job as a Video Game Tester:
-It's a job. Yes, it does pay, but the average pay is between $10-$15/hr which is great for someone looking to break into the industry, but not after you've graduated from college. (I have no idea where people are getting $60k/year figures from, but that's game DESIGNER rates.)
-You need to live IN a city that the developer has a studio at. Cities like Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York City have numerous developers. (Google, "Dallas Gaming Mafia," to get an idea.) Don't believe me, check out Nintendo's official game tester recruiting page.
-You'll need to be a minimum of 16 years old, preferably 18 years old, with good writing skills, and ofcourse, a background in gaming is also helpful. (It'll also help if you're active on the forums of whatever company you're looking to join or are a member of their advisory panel.)
-Don't post your email address or phone number under articles/posts about 'video game jobs.' Recruiters don't scour the internet looking for potential testers, they read well-written resumes that are submitted to their website. The only thing you will get from this, is an unbelievably amount of spam.
-Don't pay money for a website that will tell you how to get a 'video game tester' job. They'll take your money and give you all the information I just gave you for free. (Or lead you to believe a bunch of b.s.)
-To find jobs, go to a game developer's website, look for "jobs/careers," click the link/tab, and then search for "tester."
